Clap, clap, clap.

Excellent post, Mr. Abbott.

I do think there's a bit of desperation in the air, and that authors are being instructed to "promote themselves" at every possible opportunity.

Blogs, Facebook, Twitter.

More and more we're seeing some extremely awkward attempts at self-promotion, which often generate something opposite from the desired result. I mean to say: Instead of wanting to buy the book, I want to hurl.

I am a teacher in grade one. I am writing because I have always had a few favorite authors and have been teaching with them for 17 years until this year. A retiring teacher had given me the "Teaching with Kevin Henkes" book a few years ago and since I really didn't know this author I had set it aside until this year. (I have read a few of your books to my classes as casual reading.) I have now discovered a new author who I not only enjoy but whose characters teach such valuable lessons that my classroom children love all that goes on with thses books! I read them 3 or 4 times and each time the children are engaged and excited about the things that happen even though they know the story. It is like they have heard something a first time.

My hat is off to you, Kevin Henkes, for making such interesting characters that have so much to share. Some of my best writing pieces this year have come from characters that have flower names, (Chrysanthemum) or in the advice they have given Lilly (Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse). The dicussions we have had about worries (Wemberly Worried) or jealousy (Julius, the Baby of the World) and being brave (Sheila Rae the Brave). They have been beyond what I could have imagined! We have followd Lilly through many books and the class is so excited to see that she had been present on so many stories. Thank you again for taking a 'new author' to my 'favorite' stage.

Tony -

Thank you for captivating the students with your words. For some, writing will be held in their souls forever. If you are ever back in this area - feel free to land at Daves - This time, I will take on the gathering and we can continue the conversations.

I love the poem! It has a certain amount of depth and sincerity that makes it memorable! It is currently hanging on my wall!

What a delightful description! It makes me want to read Wendy's books! Asking for these descriptions was a nice idea, Tony. Thanks for sharing the responses.

Tony - Congratulations! You must be so thrilled to be nominated for an Edgar! I would be over the moon - I am so proud of you, and think it's absolutely wonderful and well-deserved. As I mentioned last week I loved the book, and think the panelists made a wonderful decision. By the way, thanks also for the kind words about our staff. Take care.

So sad. As my friend Jigsaw might opine, "Yeesh." I hope the above didn't sound too, too pathetic. Anyway, what's true is true. Thanks again, Tony, for the attention (which I crave!).
